Satellite Installation
The IPStar-1 Satellite has a number of antennae providing coverage across Australia. The majority of Australia’s population is covered by 10 “spot beam” antennae. The Satellite signal within these spot beams is strong. If you live within one of these spot beams, you will most likely need either an 84cm or 1.2m satellite dish. The rest of Australia is covered by a single antenna called a “shaped beam”. The signal in areas covered by a shaped beam antenna is far weaker than that in the spot beam areas and requires either a 1.2 or 1.8 meter dish.
Standard Installation (Spot Beam coverage areas)
A standard installation consists of:
- Mounting an Aussie Broadband 84 cm or 1.2m satellite dish on your roof;
- Installing 2 coaxial cables from the dish to the Aussie Broadband Satellite modem, connected through a wall mounted plate; and
- Configuring the connection and setting up your email.
At your dwelling we need:
- A suitable dish mounting position that provides unhindered line-of-sight to the IPStar-1 satellite;
- A building with a suitable dish mounting position that is easily accessible and is no more than 2 levels high;
- Maximum cable length of no more than 30 meters between the outdoor dish and indoor modem unit; and
- A suitable computer - see below for details.
Non Standard Installation (for shaped beam coverage areas)
All non standard installations are subject to approval by the Australian Broadband Guarantee for a Level 5 subsidy grant.
How do I know if I am a Standard Installation or not?
Using your address, we can determine if you are covered by a spot or shaped beam antenna and which satellite dish size will be required. We will also ask you some questions about the building that you want the dish mounted to.
Computer Requirements:
In order to use the Aussie Broadband Satellite Service, it is recommended that you have, at a minimum, the following:
- A computer running an operating system that supports connection to the internet via an ethernet port. This includes Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista and recent versions of Apple and Linux operating systems;
- An industry standard internet browser such as Windows Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera or Safari;
- Your computer should be in good working order with no software problems;
- 512Mb of RAM; and
- A working ethernet network port – This is mandatory and the service will not function without it. If you do not have an ethernet network port, these can usually be installed by your local computer retailer for around $40. An ethernet network port is an 8 pinned rectangular socket.
It is highly recommended that you have up-to-date virus scanner and anti-spyware software installed.
