Aussie Broadband VoIP Product
We recommend the Linksys SPA3102 as the VoIP Gateway / Router ATA. This device has the flexibility in the settings we need to get VoIP working to our expectations over the satellite network. It’s also a reasonable router and is fairly well priced at $100. We will be supplying ATA’s pre-configured, but will also supply settings if customers already own a Linksys SPA3102 ATA or want to buy one elsewhere. Be careful they are unlocked and not tired into Engin Etc. We will only support an ATA we have supplied though.
You will not need an additional router to use the satellite service straightaway unless you plan on connecting more than one computer. If you have more than one computer you will need a standard Ethernet switch only or a wireless access point if you want access to the satellite service wirelessly. The satellite modem has NAT and DHCP so it will issue local IP addresses to your LAN network if required.
The VoIP product we offer will work on 512/128kbps and above data plans. To get VoIP to work properly over the satellite network we will have your satellite VoIP traffic prioritised over the IPStar network and it will reduce you available Internet bandwidth while you are on a call. With overhead VoIP uses about 72/72kbps, so if you have 256/64kbps bandwidth this will be a problem. You must have a minimum 512/128kbps which would still give you usable Internet speeds while on a call. If you use your data up for the month and get shaping to 64/64kbps, your Internet speed remains at 64/64kbps while on a call.
Another important point to note is that we will not count the data you use during VoIP calls towards your normal Internet plans monthly usage.
We will providing an online accounting system that will allow customers to check the calls they have made. This will be similar to the way they can check Internet data usage.
Invoices Etc. processed in the same way as normal Internet.
Call Rate Changes:
National and Mobile rates will not change without giving you 30 days notice, however international rates can change from month to month. An online phone number rate checker tool will be provided to establish what an international rate is for that particular number you would like to call.
Monthly plan costs will be billed in advance along with normal Internet plans.
Any other amount over the fixed monthly amount will be charged out in the following month along with your normal account debit. This is for instance calls in addition to the included calls, calls to mobile phones and overseas calls.
We are only going to offer a one-way service at this time. This means that over the VoIP service:
- You must not rely on this VoIP service to call any emergency numbers including but not limited to 000.
- You can only make outgoing calls. I.E. you don’t have a unique telephone number that you can be called on.
- Calls to some special numbers like 1900 numbers are not available.
- If you experience a power outage you will not be able to make calls.
- No caller identification information is available when you make a call.
