What is mobile data and how much do you need?

What is mobile data and how much do you need?

Overview

No one wants to spend money on data they don’t use but hitting that sweet spot of the perfect amount of data for your mobile plan can be difficult.

How much data do I need for my mobile plan?

We’re here to help!

Here’s a few things you should consider when selecting the data allowance on your plan.

How much do you use Wi-Fi?

If you’re usually at home, work, or school, and those places have Wi-Fi, your mobile data usage might be pretty low.

If you’re often out and about, your phone will rely more on mobile data to stay connected. That’s when your usage starts to matter more.

Someone who works remotely from cafes or travels a lot might need more data than someone who’s mostly connected to Wi-Fi during the day.

How do you use your phone?

Minimal use

If you’re just checking emails or sending messages, you won’t use much data.

Moderate use

If you’re streaming music on your commute, using GPS to get around, or watching videos while waiting for the train, you’ll need a bit more.

Heavy use

If you’re livestreaming, uploading content, or working remotely from your phone, you’ll probably need a larger data allowance.

How do you use social media?

The data needed for social media can vary. Scrolling through image or text posts doesn’t use much data, but watching videos, uploading stories, or viewing/hosting livestreams can add up quickly.

We haven’t included specific numbers for how much data each activity uses, because those figures are constantly changing. Streaming platforms, app updates, and even phone settings can all affect how much data is used, so it’s more helpful to focus on your habits than exact numbers.

Track your habits

If your mobile service allows you to track your data usage, it’s a great way to see how often you use data, and how much you’re using day to day.

If you’re ordering a mobile service and are unsure about how much data you need, you can always select a lower mobile data plan, track your usage, then upgrade later if you find you need it.

There’s no need to overthink it, start with what feels right for your lifestyle and keep an eye on your usage to find your data sweet-spot.
