How to switch business nbn® providers

Two business owners in their creative studio looking at a laptop

Your nbn® provider should give your business more than just an internet connection.

They should be an expert business partner that helps you use and make the most of your internet and telecommunications.

And with such a commitment, business owners often have the misconception they’re married to their nbn® provider. And therefore, switching for a better deal will result in a messy divorce that will be more trouble than it’s worth for your business.

But that isn’t the case. Switching business nbn® providers is often so simple that you might not even notice your business switched!

Well, at least when you switch to Aussie Broadband.

Here’s a step-by-step guide that covers everything you need to know about switching business nbn® providers.

Step 2: Order your service

Once you know what plan suits your business, you can go ahead and make an order through our website.

When you order an nbn® service, you’ll have the option to add hardware. If you choose to order hardware, we’ll preconfigure it to work with your service. That means when you plug in the hardware, your new internet connection should start working straight away.

Until your hardware arrives, we won’t switch your connection over. So until your new connection’s ready to go, you can continue using the internet as normal on your old one.

Should you want to use your existing hardware, you must configure it yourself. If the hardware came with your nbn® plan, you must ensure it isn’t locked to your current provider. If it’s locked, you must contact your existing provider to assess your options. You may find that you can’t configure your old hardware to work with your new plan. So, confirming your hardware’s compatibility beforehand could save a headache down the line.

You’ll also have the option to set a connection date. If your current plan has a contract, even month-to-month, we recommend setting your connection date to just before it ends or rolls over. As your old plan will disconnect as soon as your new one is up and running, you want to ensure you’re not paying for internet you’re not using. It’s the same deal if you move from your home office or co-working space to a new premises. In that case, you’ll want to set the connection date for the day you move in.

How long does it take to switch business nbn® providers?

If you already have an nbn® service, switching to another provider can typically take up to 48 business hours. However, it can take as little as a couple of hours. While, for reasons outside of our control, some service orders may take longer, we do our best to ensure we meet the 48 business hour timeframe. If you order a VoIP service alongside your nbn® and want to keep your existing number, the number porting process can take up to six weeks.

Step 3: Activate your service

Before you activate your new nbn® service, you’ll need to ensure nothing’s lost in the transition.

If you have a Voice over IP (VoIP) or nbn® phone service, you’ll need to transfer this over with your plan. If you don’t, you risk having it disconnected by your old provider once you switch.

Aussie Broadband offers a range of VoIP plans to suit any business. We’ll port your number over while minimising downtime so your business stays connected. But if even a short period of downtime isn’t an option for your business, we can organise to have your number temporarily diverted to your mobile. That way, you won’t miss a single call during the nbn® switchover process.

The pre-activation checklist:

Here’s what to do before switching your nbn® service to a new provider:

  • Ensure your provider will cancel your nbn® service once you switch. Most will, but some may require a notice period or for you to contact them directly before switching off your service.

  • Have your hardware ready. If you’re bringing your own hardware, confirm it’s compatible with your new service to make activating a seamless process.

  • Ensure you’ve arranged to transfer all other services that rely on an nbn® connection, such as your business phones.

  • Once your new service is up and running, ensure your old provider has cancelled your old service. Sometimes, even if you do disconnect, your current provider might continue charging you until you contact them directly to cancel it.

We’ll activate your service on your chosen connection date – swapping your nbn® connection from your old plan to your new one. If you’ve ordered hardware from us, we’ll ensure it’s delivered and ready to go by the connection date.

Most of the time, you’ll only experience downtime for the time it takes to configure your modem. But if you can’t afford to be without internet for even a short time, consider using mobile broadband as a backup connection.

With Aussie Broadband, switching nbn® providers is simple. But that doesn’t mean you’ll go it alone. At every stage of the switching process, our friendly, 100% Australian-based team is here to guide you through the process and offer any assistance you may need.
