How do I upgrade to a Multi-Gigabit NBN plan?

If you select our Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) 2000/200Mbps, or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) 2000/100Mbps plans, and currently use an older model of NBN connection box, (pictured below), you will require an upgrade.

How to upgrade your FTTP connection box

1.      Select your existing service in the MyAussie app, portal, or Carbon, and select Edit Plan.  

2.      Select the 2000/200Mbps plan.

3.      If your NBN box requires an upgrade, you will be prompted to book an NBN technician appointment. The timeframe for this appointment is usually within 2-4 weeks, taking approximately, requiring a 4-hour window.
Please note: Someone over 18 years old will need to attend the property during the appointment window.


During the appointment, the NBN technician will replace your existing NBN box in it’s current location. You will not have the opportunity to move the NBN box.

If you wish to change the location of your connection, we recommend speaking to an ACMA registered cabler.

4.      Your plan change will only take affect once the upgrade has been completed.

Differences between single-port FTTP connection boxes and multi-port FTTP connection boxes

If your FTTP connection box requires an upgrade, NBN will install a box with a single port to plug your router into, unless your situation specifically requires a multi-port connection box.

In some situations, multi-port upgrades may incur a cost. To request a multi-port connection box, please reach out to our support team or your account manager.

Multi-port NBN boxes have a maximum bandwidth that services from the NBN box can share. If the total bandwidth of your services exceeds this bandwidth, you may need to downgrade a service.

How to upgrade your HFC connection box

1.      Select your existing service in the MyAussie app, portal, or Carbon, and select Edit Plan.  

2.      Select the 2000/100Mbps plan.

3.      If your NBN box requires an upgrade, you will most likely sent a Self-Install Kit (SIK) via Australia Post. We will SMS you tracking information once it’s on its way. Delivery times usually range from 2-5 business days.

Please note: In a small amount of situations, you may require an NBN technician appointment instead of a Self-Install Kit. If this is the case, please follow the FTTP connection box upgrade process [anchor link] for appointment booking instructions.  

4.      Your plan change will only take affect once the upgrade has been completed.

5.      Once your SIK arrives, please follow the instructions below to setup your device:

Setting up your HFC connection box

1.      Connect the white coaxial cable to the wall outlet, making sure that the cable is secure.

2.      Connect the other end to the Coaxial port in the NBN connection box.
Please note: Once your coaxial cable is plugged in, it becomes locked in place. To remove it, insert an object like a toothpick or pin into the small hole in the lock.

3.      Insert the power cable into the power port of the NBN box and plug the other end into a wall outlet, then switch the power on.

4.      Important: please wait 30 minutes for your connection box to power up and configure itself. After this, all 4 lights should be solid green.

5.      Plug in the router to the connection box using a CAT6a ethernet cable.

What kind of router do I need for Multi-Gigabit plans?

• If you would like to broadcast multi-gigabit speeds over Wi-Fi, we recommend using a router with at least Wi-Fi 7 technology.

• Make sure any ethernet cables you use (including the cable from your connection box to the router) are at least CAT 6a or higher.

• For the most consistent speeds to your devices, we recommend using a wired connection to the router.
