Aussie Broadband (ASX: ABB) is proud to announce its support as a foundational customer of SUBCO’s Sydney-Melbourne-Adelaide-Perth (SMAP) transcontinental subsea fibre cable, providing unparalleled capacity and redundancy to Aussie Broadband’s network.

SMAP is a 5,000‑kilometre fully armoured subsea system linking Australia’s east and west coasts and designed to deliver up to 400 Tbps of total capacity across 16 fibre pairs using advanced Spatial Division Multiplexing technology. The system is a major upgrade to Australia’s backbone connectivity in over two decades and will be the first long-haul subsea cable to directly link Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

The cable will also provide added redundancy for the Sydney-Perth corridor, while increasing Aussie Broadband’s capacity to 400G between each of the intracity links. This is the first fibre subsea system to connect all four states, offering Aussie additional physical diversity while empowering our network to support larger traffic flows and even greater demands for customer traffic. SMAP is designed to be the first fully carbon neutral subsea cable in the world thanks to its energy-efficient and renewable design.

“By coming on board early as a foundational customer of SMAP, we’re locking in the capacity, performance and resilience our customers will need for the next decade and beyond,” Aussie Broadband Chief Technology Officer Brad Parker said. “The hyperscale capacity and added redundancy allows us to move massive volumes of traffic between our capital city points‑of‑presence with lower latency, higher availability and far more headroom for growth.”

"We're thrilled that Aussie Broadband has chosen SUBCO as a SMAP foundation customer, adding additional resiliency and to support their continued growth as one of Australia's largest NBN providers. The partnership reflects a growing movement toward Australian-owned, Australian-built infrastructure and the critical role it will play in the nation's future." Bevan Slattery, CEO and Founder of SUBCO, said.
